Briar and the others walked for a long time with nothing but the sound of their footsteps crunching or squelching on the mossy ground. Axel stepped on an orb-like plant and it exploded, sending water all over Briar’s trousers.

“Ugh. Wisps are welcome to come anytime.” Briar used her cuffs to wipe off the excess of the liquid, which was gel-like. The evoch were supposed to be drawn to power and were more likely to appear the further into the grove they got.

“You think we’re getting deeper?” Madora asked. “Can’t tell if we’re just going in circles.”

“We aren’t going in circles,” Locke replied. Briar eyed him. He and Oakley hadn’t said much at all.

“How do you know?” Briar asked. Locke shot her a snide look.

“Because we haven’t passed the same trees twice.”

“They all look the same,” Briar snorted.

“To you,” Locke replied.

“If none turn up soon, we switch directions,” Maddy said.

“We go where Locke says,” Oakley replied.

“Do we now?” Maddy raised her eyebrows.

“He found the vhalmorr symmetry.” Oakley said. “He knows the trees.”

“Knows the trees? Now that’s a phrase.” Axel looked thoughtful for a moment. “What would it be then…” he cocked his head. “Locke Fang of the… Drath-Elm Clan?”

He must have hit one sensitive chord, because everyone stilled. Briar drew to a halt as the other three stopped to stare at Axel, Oakley’s mouth was part way open, and Locke was glaring bloody murder. Even Maddy’s eyebrows had shot up.

“Nail on the head, then?” Axel asked, that cocky smile on his face.

Locke rounded on him, which wasn’t as impressive as it should have been in vamp form, given Axel’s ridiculous height.

“How dare you.” His expression was twisted in a snarl. Axel, though, glanced at Briar as if a fully shifted vamp wasn’t about to pounce on him.

“They get really upset when mainlanders know their full names.”

Oakley touched Locke’s shoulder. “He is meaningless, Locke. Leave him.”

Locke was stiff with rage and his jaw ticked as he stared at Axel. He took a step back, though, letting Oakley tug him away.

“What is with you?” Briar hissed as the two of them walked ahead of them. “And baiting vamps?”

“No way I could live with Sy this long if I didn’t make it a sport.”

“You are playing with fire.” That was Maddy. Orange light burst to life beside Briar, and she glanced back at Axel to see a flame flickering above his palm.

“That’s what I do,” he replied, much too cheerily.

Despite her comment, Briar noticed Maddy’s resting scowl had been replaced with something a little more pleased.

After a while, Oakley turned back to the three of them. “How do you know about that clan?” she asked, tense, but curious.

“I know a lot of clans,” Axel said. “Pays well to know about your sort.”

“No one gives away our secrets.” Locke didn’t turn back to them as he said that.

“Wonder if you’d still think that way if I was carving your back open with a branding blade,” Axel mused.

Briar tried to find the joke in his expression but, unsurprisingly, found none.
